John T. Shea serves as CEO of the Division of School Facilities (DSF) at the New York City Department of Education, the nation’s largest K-12 school district. Since 2008, he has overseen an immense portfolio of 1,500 buildings spanning 135 million square feet and serving 950,000 students, including universal pre-kindergarten programs. Under his leadership, DSF manages a diverse workforce of over 9,000 professionals, including hundreds of specialists in facility management, engineering, sustainability, and environmental health and safety. His team also includes 450 skilled trades workers, 860 custodian engineers, 1,100 building engineers, and 6,500 maintenance staff. Prior to joining NYC DOE, John led facilities operations at Nassau County BOCES, New York State’s largest regional school district. His career began in maritime engineering, where he supervised ship construction both domestically and around the world.
